After a wisdom tooth extraction, you will want to recover and heal properly to maintain strong oral health. To help you properly heal after your wisdom teeth have been removed, our Joseph Rigg, DDS dental team would like to share the following tips:
Tip 1: Keep a clean piece of gauze over the pocket of the missing tooth. Apply pressure for 45 minutes to help stop the bleeding. If needed, continue this process with a new gauze pad until the bleeding stops. Avoid rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours after surgery.
Tip 2: Ice the affected area with an ice pack. This will reduce the swelling in your face. Apply the pack for 10 minutes and then take it off for 20 minutes. Repeat this process as necessary.
Tip 3: Take the prescribed medications your doctor gave to you to relieve the pain. If you do not have prescribed medication, you can use over-the-counter pain medications to help.
Tip 4: Have a liquid diet until the numbness wears off. Then, have a soft-foods diet for a few days to keep the surgical area clean and safe.
Tip 5: Continue to brush your teeth but avoid brushing the teeth neighboring the affected area for the first 24 hours. On the second day, feel free to brush all of your teeth but be as gentle and as careful as possible. Please stay away from commercial mouth rinses.
